After a lots of consideration, I have finally made up my mind to jailbreak my iPhone 3G as I am curious to see what Cydia have to offer… ;-)

iPhone JailBreak Icon

Detailed Step by Step JailBreaking Instruction

I found a very detailed step by step instruction to help me to start the jailbreaking process. This is extremely useful if you like to jailbreak your iPhone 3G.

Check it out at: JailBreaking Instruction at iPhone School

In short, you just need to update your iPhone 3G to the latest firmware 2.2.1, download the QuickPwn installer and you are ready to go.

The process is very straight forward and easily guided. Just a precaution, you need to follow the instruction to press the home and power buttons because there is a time limits, otherwise, you will need to restart the jailbreaking process all over.

Beware If You have Lots of 3rd Party Apps on Your iPhone

iPhone Reboot Hanged after JailBreaking

I made quite a stupid mistake that wasted me to spend almost 5 hours to restore my iPhone settings. I like to download lots of 3rd party apps from the AppStore just to try and test. I did not remove all the app before the downloading the jailbreaking code into my iPhone. It ended up that I could not reboot my iPhone after jailbreaking. The iPhone hanged with reboot screen like the photo on the left.

Luckily, I found a solutions on iPhonedownlow.com.

The reason of iPhone reboot Hanged : I have too many 3rd Party Apps on my iPhone.

Ok well, I followed the instruction to restore my iPhone to the factory settings all over and retore my Backup into the iPhone again.

This is a painful process, it took me nearly 5 hours… damn…!!!

Hopefully, just to share this stupid lesson with you such that you do not make this mistake again. Make sure you remove all your 3rd party Apps from your iPhone first before starting the jailbreaking process.

My JailBreaking Works and I have Cydia on my iPhone 3G

I made sure I removed all my Apps from iPhone in my 2nd jailbreaking trial. I also did a backup to sync all my contact as well before jailbreaking.

The process is smooth, I see the downloading screen, reboot, and it works… in less than 15 minutes.

Finally, I have the Cydia store on my iPhone now. It is time to start searching for some incredible apps…

Cydia App Store on iPhone

However, I saw an article on Digital Inspiration that Apple is hit with a disappointing sales in India…

Disappointing Apple iPhone 3G Sales in India

According to the article, the high price tag is the reason to explain for slow sales of iPhone 3G in India. Well, I do not know about India market enough. Maybe the price tag is indeed too high for the general public to take on. I will argue that the India mobile operators is not putting in enough effort to promote the phone.

Many phone operators are actually subsidizing the iPhone by locking down the subscriber wtih a contract. So, I would say the high success rate in many countries are contributed by the high subsidy given by the mobile operators. There are many people here in Singapore got the iPhone 3G for FREE simply because they are a heavy mobile phone user by subscribing to a high end mobile plan. Unfortunately, SingTel has annouced recently their profit margin was hurted due to heavy subsidy of the iPhone 3G.

In view of these, maybe India Mobile operators are the smartest in the world NOT to subsidize the iPhone… ;-)

Apple iPhone 3G is a cool gadget I love. So, I play with it day and night, but then due to long hour usage, I realize the battery seems to be a bit weaker and not long lasting enough.

Well, after some trial and error, I realized there are some tips you can save power on iPhone.

Here are some steps that I took:

Turn off 3G Network

3G network consumed lots of power. Set the default setting of 3G network to disable will help to conserve energy. You can also activate it when you need to use the 3G data transfer. It may sound troublesome to click a few step to activate it, but I think the effort is worth it to conserve the energy.

Turn off Wi-Fi after Usage

Always set the Wi-Fi to disable mode, otherwise, it will continue to scan for a network and that consume lots of power too. I will usually activate it only when I am at home or at a hotspot, but I will remind myself to disable right after my usage. That helps ot make my battery standby mode last longer.

Lower the Screen Brightness

Screen backlight also is one main source of energy consumption. You can lower the brightness and that will also chip in to your enery consumption too.

Check Email Manually

Finally, do not use the push mail technology or set the update frequency a bit longer. This will definitely save you some power too. I myself deactivate the auto push and I prefer to check mail manually when I need it. This also help me to save some unnecessary data charges too… ;-)

Finally, I used to need to charge my iPhone everyday but after taking the steps mentioned above, I only need to charge the iPhone every 2 days. I think the effort is definitely worth it.
